Cyberworkers at risk of deep vein thrombosis

by The Mandarin 6/17/2008 4:24:00 PM

Researchers in New Zealand and the UK have concluded a study which shows that Cyberworkers who spend up to eight hours a day sitting at a desk and spend more than 3 hours without stretching are effectively doubling their chances of getting deep vein thrombosis.

In fact, they concluded that such actions are as dangerous as flying for increasing the danger of lethal blood clots, according to Richard Beasley, from Wellington Hospital, New Zealand "The  risk of developing blood clots with prolonged seated immobility is largely unrecognised.  however this study shown that it is at least as important a factor as long distance air travel.  It is similar to the situation with the risk of blood clots with long haul flights".  He also added that "Both the maximum time seated at work during a 24- hour period and the maximum time seated without getting up were associated with an increased risk."

They also concluded that every extra hour spent sitting down without getting up could increase the likelihood of blood clots by 20 percent.  This is because of the increased pressure in the veins found in the legs.

This is all scary stuff! so what do they suggest if you sit at your computer for most of the day?

  1. The same leg and foot exercises that you are advised to do when you are on long haul flights.
  2. Regular breaks away from your desk to walk around.

The diagram below shows exercises that can be perfomed at your desk.

Brilliant presentation by Rashmi Sinha of Slideshare

by The Mandarin 6/13/2008 12:33:00 PM

I came across this gem while reading the blog of Richard Menneveux; a fellow cyberworker.

This is an absolutely brilliant presentation by Rashmi Sinha of Slideshare, his company has a super product that creates web based online presentations, the presentation is delivered using their technology which makes it all the better.

His narrative on how the company has got to where it is very inciteful.  Highlights include the need for speed, agility and the ability to execute - this makes sense because clearly you need more than a "good idea".

Enjoy the presentation!
